Parent Resources – MODELING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP & VALUES

Children learn by example—they absorb what they see and hear. Squash, like all sports, is built on respect, integrity, and fair play. Good sportsmanship helps young players enjoy the game, grow through competition, and carry positive lessons into life—whether they win or lose.

As a parent, your behavior strongly influences your child’s. The best way to promote good sportsmanship is to model it yourself.

  1. AT MATCHES & TOURNAMENTS
  • Stay in the spectator area—let coaches coach and referees officiate.\
  • Sideline coaching – If no coach, give positive and simple advice to your child and ONLY between games.
  • Lend a hand only when asked by the coach or event staff.
  • Cheer positively—offer enthusiasm, encouragement, and applause.
  • Keep it respectful—never make negative comments toward players, coaches, referees, or other parents.
  • Stay composed no matter the outcome.
  • Be responsible—do not attend events under the influence of alcohol.

    2. SHOW APPRECIATION

    • Thank coaches, referees, event organizers, and volunteers who make the event possible.
    • Support a strong coach–parent–player partnership with open, respectful communication.
    • By understanding and embracing your role, you help create a positive environment that supports learning, enjoyment, and long-term development—on and off the court.
