Starting Out: First Intro to Squash 1.2 – INTRODUCING A NEW GROUP TO SQUASH

POINTS TO CONSIDER

  • When delivering coaching lessons and clinics for young children new to the sport, it is important coaches do so in a way that impowers their player, makes them feel confident, and gives them a safe environment to express their true self.
  • Whatever their ability, be sure to give them a great workout. They should leave with a sweat and a smile!
  • Set up the clinic to work as a group or TEAM. Bring as much ‘camaraderie’ as possible.
  • Use targets and give them collaborative ways so they work together and enjoy achieving them as a group.
  • Give calm, constant, positive, and encouraging feedback.
  • Explain ‘why’ doing something is necessary.
  • Give a summary at the end of the clinic and give the players 2 or 3 points to leave with and work on.
  • Ask for their feedback during the clinic and at the end of the session.
  • Ask each player to set themselves a couple of goals, however big or small. Revisit these goals again in 1 month
