Starting Out: First Intro to Squash 1.1 – IMPORTANT STARTING POINTS

Important Starting Points
It is important to plan out your sessions ahead of time. Make sure you have
a purpose to your group classes/lessons. Have many ideas and fun games to
call on when needed. A coach needs to be able to think on their feet and
have with an alternative plan, as things happen, and changes can be needed
unexpectedly. Being able to react in a positive, fun and knowledgeable way
is an amazing and helpful skill.

It is likely you will need/want to split up a large group into smaller groups,
so use the solo drill exercise to figure out the skill level. By the end of
this session, you should have the appropriate groups written down and
ready for next week when the theme is ‘Drives’.

  • Make every player feels welcome, excited and has FUN!
  • Answer any immediate questions or concerns.
  • Clearly introduce/demonstrate the theme and structure of the session for
  • players to engage with and follow along.
  • Be energetic and approachable from the very start.
  • Use the correct squash ball that is appropriate to the group you are
  • coaching.
