Starting out – USE THE CORRECT BALL

Using appropriate squash ball ensures a more enjoyable experience, reduces the risk of injury, and helps players refine skills with more ease and fun. US Squash strongly advocates for adopting suitable ball types to enhance participation and retention at all levels.

Let’s move beyond the idea that only the double yellow dot ball represents “true” squash. Progressing through ball types doesn’t make the squash played any less ‘real’ and nor is it a race, especially for juniors, where proper development should take priority over winning. We also recommend that experienced squash players of different ages, especially in the master’s category, embrace using a bouncier ball which is likely to add more enjoyment and quality to their matches and practices.

Using the right ball early on helps establish sound technique which becomes harder to correct with age. Matching the ball to a player’s skill, age, and athleticism ensures squash remains fun and engaging which is the key to long-term participation and growth.

CURRENT AUTOMATIC BALL CHOICE: The double yellow dot ball, widely used by professionals on the PSA World Tour, is also the most popular choice in recreational squash. However, it often challenges beginners, especially young juniors, as it requires consistent power to warm up effectively.

RECREATIONAL PLAYERS: Recreational players who struggle to warm up the ball may experience poor bounce, fewer rallies, and a less enjoyable game.

COURT CONDITIONS: Court conditions significantly impact ball performance, making it crucial to choose the appropriate ball—professional, intermediate, or beginner—based on skill level and playing environment.

ENJOYMENT: To encourage player development and enhance enjoyment, we aim to shift the default ball choice for young juniors and beginners away from the double yellow dot.

DIFFERENT BALL CHOICES: Let’s explore the various balls available to ensure the best possible squash experience for everyone. Please watch this video from the World Squash Federation.
