Points to consider
- When delivering coaching lessons and clinics for young girls new to the sport, it is important coaches do so in a way that impowers their player, makes them feel confident, and give them a safe environment to express their true self.
- Whatever their ability, be sure to give them a great workout. They should leave with a sweat and a smile!
- Set up the clinic to work as a group or TEAM. Bring as much ‘camaraderie’ as possible.
- Use targets and give them collaborative ways so they work together and enjoy achieving them as a group.
- Give calm, constant, positive, and encouraging feedback.
- Explain ‘why’ doing something is necessary.
- Give a summary at the end of the clinic and give the female players 2 or 3 points to leave with and work on.
- Ask for their feedback at the end of the session and even during the clinic.
- Ask each girl to set themselves a couple of goals, however big or small. Revisit these goals again in 1 month.
FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT COACHING GIRLS
At an early age, young women are often programmed to shy away from sports and activity because they are afraid of being perceived as unfeminine, are afraid of failure or being teased. As coaches, it is extremely important we recognize the stigma young girls have when participating sport as well as the factors that hold them back. While you can’t stop every online troll or social media post, you can make your squash lessons/clinic a place of security and expression for young girls to reach their full potential and confidence.
