PLAY THIS VIDEO TO LEARN HOW TO HIT A FOREHAND VOLLEY
Students are familiar with the forehand and backhand straight and cross court drives; now it’s time to learn the volley!
Please keep in mind that we only recommend moving on to this volley drill if the students have completed the previous drills at a satisfactory level.
- Get two students to demonstrate crosscourt volley for the entire group. Remind students to maintain a correct grip.
- One student stands on the backhand side of the court, while the other stands on the forehand.
- Player A begins with a mini serve and hits the ball across the court to Player B. Player B returns the ball crosscourt on the volley to Player A. This continues back and forth until the rally breaks down.
- Switch around each time the rally ends.

TO HIT A VOLLEY:
- Use the same swing as a straight forehand or backhand drive but hit the ball higher in the air before it bounces.
- When it’s their turn, each pupil stands sideways to the net, racquet head up (but not too high) with a correct, firm grip.
- The swing should move forward with an upward motion as it follows through.
- Repeat this on the backhand side.
- ENCOURAGE THE USE OF THE VOLLEY DURING SUBSEQUENT GAMES AND PRACTICES.
