PLAY THIS VIDEO TO LEARN HOW TO DO THE RESTRICTED BACKHAND SWING (NO HITTING)

After learning the grip, forehand swing, and forehand drive, students will move on to learn the restricted backhand swing required in the school gym setting.
- Following the video, spread students out at a SAFE DISTANCE from one another to perform a restricted backhand swing.
- Remind students to maintain a strong grip.
- When the teacher says ‘swing’, practice fifteen safe limited forehand swings.
- Once students are familiar with the restricted swing, they can go on to learning to hit a restricted backhand from a ‘drop bounce feed’.
WRITTEN DETAILS ABOUT THE RESTRICTED SWING

- Begin the swing with the racquet head up and back, but no higher than the shoulder, and with the hand/grip at waist level.
- Turn sideways to the wall or net to get a solid hitting position, then lunge to hit the ball.
- Turn and swing from the back of your shoulder.
- Keep the racquet face slightly open and the knuckles up so that you strike the ball slightly under the ‘contact’ point.
- Instead of hitting the ball, consider using a push/’pat-a-cake’ technique. This way, the students will strike the ball softly.
- Follow through with a shorter, slower swing, and point the racquet in the direction you want the ball to go.
