Tournament Guide for Parents 101 – BASIC RULES AND TACTICS OF SQUASH

BASIC RULES:

  • You can hit the ball off any wall or net as long as it hits the front wall before bouncing.
  • On a regular squash court, the ball must stay below the top red line (out of court) and above the bottom red line (the tin).
  • If the ball bounces twice, the opponent wins the point.
  • Play must be constant.
  • If you win the rally, you get one point. First to 11 wins the game, however if you get to 10-10, you must win by two points, such as 12-10, 13-11, and so on.
  • Play best-of-five games. First player to win three games.

BASIC TACTICS:

  • Return to the T (middle of the court) fast and clear your own shots.
  • Hit the ball into space away from your opponent, and if in doubt, play it straight to the corners and away from the center.
  • Position yourself facing the side wall for the most of your shots.
  • Volley the ball whenever feasible (before it bounces) to acquire control, steal time from your opponent, and maintain control of the T.
  • Hit the ball high and slow (lob) to allow yourself time to recover.
  • Hit the ball harder (and lower) to put pressure on your opponent.
