Starting Out: Drives 2.8 – CONDITIONED GAMES

Explain the rules of squash before games:

  • Do they know what each line on the court means?
  • Are they aware of lets and strokes?
  • Do they know the rules of serving?
  • Do the players understand the movement to and from the ball and T?

CONDITIONED GAMES RELATED TO THE DRIVE AT THE BEGINNER LEVEL

Start by briefly showing the juniors how to serve. If the players cannot serve yet, then the coach can feed the ball to start the rally or even serve for the player.  Make the serves less challenging to start with easier areas for the ball to land. For example, ball only needs to hit above the service line and land on the other side of the court or put down tape to make the short line further up the court.

Explain to the juniors that the theme of the class is ‘Serve and Serve Return’ next week so they will have more time practice the serve in more depth soon.

CONDITIONED GAMES:

  • Half-court game on F/H, starting only hitting above the service line. Change to B/H side.
  • Half-court game anywhere (above or below service line) on one side of the court. Start on the F/H and change to the B/H.
  • Give the option of changing sides once per rally with a cross-court.
