101 Tournament Guide For Parents 1.1 – HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT US SQUASH

US Squash is the governing body for squash in the USA. US Squash sanction all the junior tournaments and run the National Junior Ranking system. They also run all the JCT and Championships throughout the season.

To set up an account for your child please visit https://ussquash.org/membership/

Click on ‘JOIN’ circled below.

You will find the list of junior tournaments by clicking on ‘PLAY’ and the ‘TOURNAMENTS’ circled below.

You can filter by clicking on ‘BRONZE’ or which ever level your child is looking to compete in. See picture below.

You can further filter on the next page as well, see picture below and all the levels circled in red.

Once you have filtered the tournament page you can look to see which bronze tournaments are in your local area or nearby state.

You can see the date of the tournaments to the right of the tournament, circled in the picture below.

MANDATORY REFEREE EXAM:

Players must complete the age-appropriate online referee exam to be listed in the rankings and to be able to enter tournaments. Players will need to recertify with a new referee exam every two years as they move into older age divisions.

When you create a US Squash account for your child the referee will automatically be added to the ‘TRAINING’ tab.

Age GroupExam Required
U11 & U13Level 1
U15Level 2
U17Level 3
U19Level 4

It is important to take this exam so that juniors have a good understanding of lets, strokes and no lets. It is highly recommended to practice marking and refereeing BEFORE your child plays in their first tournament.

You can find out the closing date of the tournament by clicking on the tournament and looking at the schedule and ‘REGISTRATION DEADLINE’ circled below.

Again, remember that for Bronze tournaments the entry is on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis, so try to plan ahead in order to make the cut in the draws.

WITHDRAWING:

  • If your child decides not to compete in a given tournament you will need to withdraw BEFORE 12pm on the Monday before the tournament.
  • In the event that your child needs to withdraw from the tournament AFTER 12pm on the Monday before the tournament, if it is the 1st late withdraw within an 11-month period, there is no penalty, but the late withdrawal will be noted on the player’s record.
  • 2nd withdraw within an 11-month period the player receives a rankings penalty. The penalty is a zero-point tournament being added to the player’s record. The zero-point tournament counts as a tournament exposure.
  • If a player begins a tournament but is unable to complete all scheduled matches due to illness or injury, the zero-point mid-tournament default ranking penalty can be waived with a doctor’s note. The doctor’s note must be submitted to tournaments@ussquash.org within one week. The player will receive the lowest amount of points available based on the round achieved at the time of the withdrawal if the doctors note is received.
